Welcome Board Member Cole Smith

By Merritt Frey, Executive Director

I’ve been remiss in welcoming a member to our board of directors — Cole Smith. Cole actually joined the board more than a year ago, and has quickly become a central part of our work. In fact, in January Cole was elected as Mali Rising’s Treasurer. We are grateful to have someone with Cole’s skills and eye for detail in this key role!

When asked why he joined Mali Rising’s board, Cole said: “I have traveled to many places and seen the power of education and the determent of not having enough education. People’s lives change from proper education. Communities and countries rise from poverty when education is foundational. This allows for innovation to create futures for everyone and at the same time circumvent many destructive challenges that can come to communities. Mali Rising is at the tip of the spear with this endeavor and making lasting changes to each girl who receives an education. I cannot think of a better mission to be a part of!”

Although we are late, we want to take a minute to have our supporters get to know Cole. I asked Cole a few questions about his board service and background. Read on for more from Cole:

 Q. What inspired you to join Mali Rising’s board?

There are so many ways to serve and help those around us and across the world. In some ways we can address the issues as they present themselves and in some ways we can focus on the root cause of problems and intervene at the earliest point possible. As I learned about Mali Rising, the mission of educating children, it became apparent that this team was focused on "root cause" intervention. I appreciated the humble consistent approach Mali Rising has taken over the years to help thousands of children have a better future. This inspired me to be a part of such a group.

Q. If someone was considering Mali Rising board service, how would you advise them to think about it?

In considering Mali Rising board service, I would recommend thinking about how education in your life guided you and opened doors that would not have been otherwise opened. I would also recommend reflecting on those early school years, the school building, teachers and resources that were readily available to help build a strong foundation of literacy. This is how we give back and make a difference.

Q. What do you like to do when you are not being a dedicated board member?

I really enjoy spending time with family and friends. Whether it is board games at home, sporting events or going out to eat, I am all about creating good memories.
