Want to Help Mali's Students?

Every wondered how you could help Mali Rising’s students? How about hosting a house party this summer? A house party is a quick and informal way to build support for Mali Rising’s students. House parties are totally flexible – they don’t even need to be in your house or a party! You could host a picnic at the park or cocktail hour at a local pub…but most people find it fun to have a gathering in their home or yard.

A Dinner That Makes A Difference

It’s that time of year — Soiree time! This is our big gathering of supporters in Salt Lake City, where we celebrate successes and look forward to a new year of school. This isn’t your normal stuffy gala. Instead of asking guests to buy trinkets at an auction, we invite everyone to “bid” on truly critical things our students and schools need to succeed. Denik Delivers Books for the Kids of Zambougou

I love many things about my job, but I have to admit that pretty much nothing makes me happier than the days we deliver textbooks to the hands of our students in Mali. Thanks to the generous folks at Denik, last week we did just that — handing more than 400 textbooks to the students of Denik Middle School in Zambougou.

With your help, we’re changing that at Mali Rising’s schools…

Textbooks = A Dancing, Singing, Village-Wide Celebration

Wow. I get excited about a new book, but the village of Beneko REALLY gets excited. I mean – they literally throw a party!  Thanks to the generosity of Mike and Bonnie King and dozens of their friends, last week we delivered more than 1,000 textbooks to our middle school in the remote village of Beneko. See the party Beneko threw to welcome their new textbooks...

Book Review: The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu

Since joining Mali Rising's staff, I've tried to read as many books written by Malians and/or about Mali as I can. Frankly, one doesn't find scads of them here in the U.S.  But I'd been hearing about The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu for a while, and was excited to see a pretty main-stream book that was set in Mali getting some attention.
